“Mike is unquestionably one of the best instructors in North America. And I have worked with a lot of people. We are very lucky to have him here on Vancouver Island.”
Michael Drislane has studied the practices of legendary performers, teachers, and composers, and is able to take both kids and adults from a beginner level to the most demanding works in piano literature.
Piano Teaching Method
Michael avoids piano methods that create ‘cookie-cutter’ performances, instead meeting you as an individual. He will customize your lessons with music you like, while also ensuring the develop of your technique and ear. Using humour and metaphor, he will break down complex ideas into ‘ah-ha’ moments.
Michael uses the Royal Conservatory of Music curriculum as a base, to ensure progress, while actively encouraging students to learn pieces from any genre of music they enjoy. Michael also encourages students to try their hand at improvisation and composition. He teaches students who wish to enrich their education as well as those who plan to pursue music professionally.
Piano Lessons for Kids
All kids are different. Therefore, Michael hand-crafts piano lessons to each child’s unique abilities and tastes. While ensuring that a solid technical foundation and good musical knowledge is acquired, Michael nevertheless looks for opportunities to give choice to his younger students, encouraging them to select the music they prefer. This guards against loss of interest, and helps the child to better connect with the music.
Piano Lessons for Adults
Michael is a master pianist with a rich background in performance, composition, and improvisation. In addition to solo work, Michael has played in chamber groups, for the ballet and opera, and has served as music director for presentations of diverse repertoire from the baroque era to the contemporary. Michael thus brings a unique range of experience to your piano lessons. He can guide you from a beginner level through to a professional level, and as an improvising, creative musician, can help any professional musician find new freedoms in their playing. Michael treats every piano lesson like a master class, designed to meet the student where they are, and help them progress rapidly.
“Michael will go far beyond teaching you the notes–he will teach you how the great composers thought. You will leave your piano lessons loving music.”
